The Plan.

Yesterday I posted that I would talk about "dorming" on the UES and my freshman year, however I feel that I need to explain my goals and why I am here in New York before I can continue on with my journey. "Why did you move to New York?" "What school do you go to?" "What is your major?" "What do you do with that major?" These are just a few common questions that I receive on a daily basis, so I will use today's post to answer all of these questions

For those of you who know me, probably know that I have always been one to know what I waInt to do in life. I might change up the specifics, but it has always been on the same track, so to speak. Since middle school, I have wanted to go into media. My OCD tendency, the perfectionist mindset, artistic mind, and the apparent love to drive myself insane has all created this desire to work in the media industry.

My dream is to work for Hearst Corporation as an Art Director for one of their many publications. For those of you that haven't heard of Hearst, they are the company that owns, but not limited to, top magazines like Cosmopolitan, Seventeen, Esquire, and Country Living. They also own ESPN and A+E Networks, The Walking Dead, anyone? Ahh, now that I have name dropped their brands, then you are probably more familiar with who Hearst Corporation is and why they are the company that I aspire to work for. I have wanted to work for them for years, so everything I do now will lead me in their direction. This leads me to my next topic of my major..

"So, what exactly ARE you majoring in?" Well, it is funny that you should ask.. My major at Baruch College will be, drum roll please, Business Communications with a specialization in Graphic Communications with a minor in Marketing.I know, it is a bit of a lengthy title. Graphic Communications basically deals with the overall look and feel of a product. We take the design and put a message to it. This major is perfect if I decided to go into advertising, as well. Now onto the question that I receive the most, "Why would you want to go to Baruch College when it's a business school?"

Exactly. Baruch College is well-known for their business program, therefore I feel that I will receive the education required to help me succeed in the business environment. Baruch College also requires their graphic communications majors to complete at least one internship before graduating. In my field, internships are the first things that are looked at when hiring a person. Therefore, going to a school that, not only suggests, but requires an internship is exactly what someone like me needs.

In addition to going to Baruch for the business classes and the internships, the location of Baruch is amazing. New York City is the media capital of the world and to thrive in that world, I need to be in it. As a result, I am here.

This will be a stressful journey, but I am prepared to work hard to turn my dreams into a reality.
Tomorrow, I will post about the dorm life. I promise, I promise. These posts will become more interesting.. I hope at least, but I need to give background before I move on.

  3. So awesome!! I am already saving to move up your way once my lease is up-- maybe by then you'll be able to recommend a complex or two. I too need to be in the media/publishing capital of the world to use my degree for what I want to do... otherwise, I'll be a preschool teacher until it drives me to the brink of insanity. :/

Anyway, I will definitely keep up with your blog-- very well-written! :)
